However, with economic growth comes an increasing volume of industrial and agricultural wastewater, along with domestic sewage, which has led to severe pollution of our urban rivers year after year.

( 1) As urban populations grow, municipal wastewater discharge has increased year after year—but wastewater treatment rates have failed to keep pace. This has resulted in significant amounts of untreated sewage being released into rivers and waterways, severely contaminating the city’s water bodies, damaging the local ecosystem, and posing serious risks to residents' health.

( 2) Industrial wastewater is the primary source of pollution in urban rivers. Industrial water contamination can originate, on one hand, from effluents generated by industries such as paper manufacturing, metallurgy, chemical engineering, and mining.

As a result, large amounts of pesticides and fertilizers wash into river channels from urban areas, severely contaminating the water quality of city rivers.

( 4) Rainwater pollution primarily refers to contamination occurring during the initial stages, when rainwater washes away pollutants from the atmosphere. After collecting these contaminants, the runoff—carrying heavy metals, organic compounds, and other pathogens—flows over roads, buildings, and accumulates household waste before eventually entering water bodies. This process significantly exacerbates pollution in rivers within China's rapidly growing urban areas, making it a major contributor to urban water pollution.
