What is the operating pressure of hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes?
The pressure range for hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membranes is 0.1 to 0.6 MPa, referring to the pressure used when processing standard solution systems within the definition of ultrafiltration. To separate substances with different molecular weights, selecting an ultrafiltration membrane with an appropriate cut-off molecular weight ensures that the operating pressure will directly influence the efficiency of the separation process.

Hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane The pressure range is 0.1–0.6 MPa refers to the pressure used when processing standard solution systems within the definition of ultrafiltration. By separating substances with different molecular weights, selecting an ultrafiltration membrane that matches the desired cut-off molecular weight allows us to better understand how operating pressure influences the process. Typically, for plastic-shell hollow-fiber membranes with internal pressure operation, the shell’s pressure resistance is significantly lower than 0.3 MPa.
Hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane The design for compressive strength is also typically lower. 0.3 MPa; therefore, the working pressure should be kept below 0.2 MPa, and the pressure difference across the membrane should not exceed 0.1 MPa. As you can see, because the internal-pressure membrane has a relatively large diameter, when used as an external-pressure membrane, it tends to easily collapse and even get torn at the bonding areas, leading to severe damage. For this reason, the company’s internally and externally pressurized membranes cannot be used interchangeably.
Hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane The ultrafiltrate, which should be a stainless steel-shell ultrafiltration membrane or a hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane, needs to be applied at the right time with sufficient pressure for the next step. At a pressure of 0.6 MPa, the ultrafiltrate is provided against an upward pressure equivalent to a 30-meter water column, which corresponds to 0.3 MPa. However, it is essential to ensure that the pressure across the hollow fiber membrane—both inside and outside—does not exceed 0.3 MPa.
Hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane When selecting the operating pressure for your process, in addition to considering the membrane and housing's pressure resistance, you must also take into account the membrane's compaction properties and its resistance to fouling. Higher pressures significantly impact water permeability—specifically, the more concentrated the retained substances become on the membrane surface, the greater the resistance coefficient will be, ultimately leading to a decline in the water flux rate. Moreover, particles entering the membrane's micropores are prone to clogging, further obstructing the flow channels.
