However, with rapid economic changes and ongoing efforts to improve living standards, the volume of industrial and agricultural wastewater, along with domestic sewage, has steadily risen year after year, leading to severe contamination of our city’s rivers.

1. Industrial wastewater is the most significant source of urban river pollution, originating from industries such as paper-making, metallurgy, chemical production, and mining. This industrial pollution ultimately manifests as contaminated effluents discharged into water bodies, contributing to air pollution that leads to acid rain. In addition to harboring substantial organic pollutants, these wastewaters often contain high levels of heavy metals and toxic substances. If directly released into natural water systems, they can cause severe damage to ecosystems. While large enterprises and industrial parks have implemented effective wastewater treatment measures, and the government has taken stringent actions—such as shutting down or relocating highly polluting facilities—serious pollution in rivers continues to occur due to inadequate regulation and enforcement against small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as township-level enterprises lacking proper sewage-treatment infrastructure, which still frequently exceed discharge standards.
2. With the large-scale development of China's livestock and poultry farming industry, the volume of manure discharge has surged dramatically, becoming a major source of urban river pollution. Regarding what exactly contaminates river water, in China’s rural areas, the rate at which livestock and poultry manure is returned to farmland remains low—only 30% to 50%. Manure that hasn’t undergone proper treatment can directly lead to nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, triggering eutrophication in various water bodies. Meanwhile, another significant contributor to urban river contamination is the widespread use of pesticides and fertilizers. Chinese agricultural enterprises apply roughly 10 times more pesticides and fertilizers per unit of cultivated land compared to those in developed countries. As a result, substantial amounts of these chemicals are washed into urban rivers, severely degrading water quality and posing a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems.
